Users of Ethernet WAN Services Gain Performance, Cost, and Scalability Advantages

SAN FRANCISCO — February 26, 2007 - Aberdeen Group's newly released "Latency Matters: The Wide Area Network (WAN) Benchmark Report," reviews the operational characteristics of the WAN and the strategic imperatives in optimizing the network for business advantage. Of the organizations surveyed, 94 percent expect their total bandwidth requirements to grow in the next 12 months. With the growing availability of newer technologies such as Ethernet WAN services and MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS), the report recommends that enterprises accelerate migration away from legacy WAN services such as frame relay and ATM to new services such as Ethernet WAN and MPLS.

"Convergence of voice, video, and data and the need for real-time, global collaboration are driving the need for faster and more scalable networks," said Keao Caindec, chief marketing officer of Yipes, a sponsor of the benchmark report. "With vendors announcing the end-of-life support for older WAN services and technologies such as frame relay, companies need to migrate to newer technologies if they don't want to be left behind."

Ethernet, a technology used in 95 percent of all computer networks, has been the clear leader in the Local Area Network (LAN) for years. Ethernet optimized for wide area transport is now the fastest growing wireline sector of the telecommunications industry.

According to the Aberdeen Group's research, users of Ethernet WAN services reap a number of benefits. For example, 61 percent of users experienced higher performance; 59 percent noted a lower cost of operation, and 49 percent reported higher scalability.

While some see Internet-based virtual private networks (IP VPNs) that support MPLS to the edge as an alternative to frame relay and ATM, it may be overkill for many enterprises. Of those surveyed in "Latency Matters: The Wide Area Network (WAN) Benchmark Report," 38 percent do not see a clear business case for migrating to MPLS, and 35 percent struggle with the complexity of converting to MPLS.

"From our research, it is clear that user interest in Ethernet WAN services is strong and growing, especially as the migration away from frame relay and ATM begins in earnest," said Peter Brockmann, vice president and research director, communications, at Aberdeen Group. "Users care about application response time and look to their WAN service providers to assure service quality."
